Juniors! OSAS Testing!

📝 OSAS Testing — THIS WEDNESDAY!

South Eugene High School will be offering OSAS (Oregon State Assessment System) testing on the mornings of Wednesday, March 11th and Thursday, March 12th to all 11th graders. 

Details for the Day: 

  • Start at 8:30AM in the Small Gym
  • Students will need their 4J laptop, charged and ready. (See our earlier post if you need to confirm an updated Operating System.)
  • Earbuds/headphones are recommended, though we will have plug-in headphones available to loan. 
  • Students will be able to get a morning snack and lunch during testing. 
  • Most will use the full day to test, though a few may finish early. 
  • Opt-Out Forms are found in the Front Office or Counseling Center. (Online Opt-Out Form is no longer available.)

Do you need to make up a test? Want to get ahead in your classes? Tuesday's Advisory will be a Teacher Resource Time! Please use this time to connect with your teachers and set yourself up for success for the remainder of the school year.

Learn to Ride Event


A Free, All Ages, Indoors Event!
Thursday, March 12, 2026, stop by anytime between 5:00-7:00 pm
Bob Keefer Center, 250 S 32nd St, Springfield
Do you or your child want to learn how to ride a bike? For those learning, start with balancing and gliding without pedals or training wheels. Some will learn to pedal in one session, while others may need more practice to reach that final goal. Join Safe Routes to School, the City of Springfield, the City of Eugene, Willamalane and Shift Community Cycles for this fun event with free bike checks. This event will take place inside the Bob Keefer Center.

You don’t need your own bike or helmet to participate, but please bring a helmet and bike if you have one. Contact christina.lundahl@springfield.k12.or.us or albee_b@4j.lane.edu with questions.

up to $1,500

For students identifying with LGBTQ+ and ally community and are first generation and/or from an under-resourced household. Award supports study at an accredited community college, 4-year college/university, or graduate program in the U.S., including Hawaii and Alaska.

Student Volunteering Opportunities:


4/10, 11, & 12: Friends of the Eugene Public Library seek high school students to volunteer at their annual book sale at the Lane Events Center Performance Hall:

  • Fri, 4/10: Unload and set up books

  • Sat, 4/11: Greet and help shoppers. Re-stock books.

  • Sun, 4/12: Greet and help shoppers. Re-stock books. Clean up and return books to the warehouse.

  • Volunteer sign-up form. After you sign up, you will be sent a link inviting you to volunteer for a particular shift.

Summer Programs in Oregon:


3/6: Fir Acres Writing Workshop application deadline. Residential summer creative writing program, held from June 21–July 4, 2026, for rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade high school students at Lewis & Clark College in Portland. Cost: $3900. Participants later admitted to Lewis & Clark will get preferential consideration for merit-based aid and are guaranteed to receive a minimum of $20,000/year in renewable scholarship funding.


5/1: Young Women’s Fire Camp application deadline. YWFC, hosted by the Eugene Springfield Fire Department, is open to all female-identifying youth between ages 16-19 and is free. Takes place 6/22-26 from 8:30-5:00. Attendees will build confidence and leadership skills and explore Fire and Emergency Medicine Services as career options.

Hatfield Marine Science Center Marine Mammals Day Camp

Newport • Ages 15-18

Camp will be held 7/6-7/9 from 9 am - 3 pm. $200 per student. Registration includes instructional materials and a T-shirt; lunches not included. Dive deep into the world of whales, seals, and sea otters in this immersive marine mammal adventure. Register.

NOW: Class of 2027: Sign up for college prep reminder textsIf current juniors sign up now, they’ll get targeted help from ECMC The College Place Oregon starting after spring break including college planning resources, scholarship search tips, and FAFSA prep for next fall. Join early so we can hit the ground running!


NOW: Congressional Internships. Students interested in an internship with their congressional representative should reach out directly to their office to determine the process and deadline for internship applications. Deadlines vary but are often in March.


Apprenticeship Opportunities. Watch this Oregon Apprenticeships Video, then browse available Oregon Apprenticeship Programs to learn about each trade, application requirements, contact details and how to apply when openings are available.


3/6: EEA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Teen Aviation Weekend registration deadline: EAA Chapter 292 hosts this free immersive event giving students ages 14-19 an introduction to the world of aviation. Subjects range from design through actual flight and conclude with an introduction to careers associated with the aerospace industry. Takes place on 3/7 and 3/8 from 9 am-4 pm in and around the Clubhouse at Independence State Airport (4803 Airport Road, Independence, OR). Lunch and snacks provided both days. Registration required. Only 30 slots available.


3/6: Saturday Academy ASE Internships application deadline. The Apprenticeships in STEAM Exploration (ASE) program connects motivated high school students with mentors in science, technology, engineering and math (STEAM) pre-professional internships. Internships are four to eight week, part-time or full-time summer positions, designed by the mentors themselves.


3/11: LAUNCH Virtual Student Event. 4-5:30 pm PDT. Cornell University, Emory University, Pomona College, Rice University and Washington University in St. Louis are proud to present LAUNCH (Linking Access, Unity, Networking, Collaboration and Higher Education). At LAUNCH, you'll virtually meet admissions officers from all five partner institutions and learn more about what unites us.

Below you will find timely announcements to keep you informed about counseling services and academic activities available to students and families. COUNSELING SERVICES AT SOUTH

The Adolescent and Family Services (AFS) Program provides school- and clinic-based counseling to adolescents (aged 12-18) struggling with mental health and/or substance use challenges. There are no out-of-pocket costs for services; AFS may bill Medicaid if available but otherwise, they have grants and contracts that allow them to serve teens at no cost to the families. 

AFS works with teens who are experiencing the following life struggles:

o Depression

o Stress and anxiety

o Experiences with trauma

o Emotion regulation difficulties

o Drug and alcohol use

o Relationship difficulties

AFS is inclusive and serves teens of all identities and backgrounds. South’s academic counselors can make direct referrals to AFS – and they offer support with no need for students to leave campus or to telehealth for care. NATIONAL HONORS SOCIETY APPLICATION NOW OPEN

Juniors or seniors with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above are invited to apply for membership in the National Honors Society. The application will remain open until Friday, March 20th. Further information and application materials may be found at:

EARN THE OREGON SEAL OF BILITERACY

Bi-lingual or multi-lingual students may sign up now for the STAMP test to earn the Oregon Seal of Biliteracy. Find more information and express your interest here: Oregon Seal of Biliteracy  


4J DISTRICT HONORS DESIGNATION

The District Honors program recognizes all 4j high school students who demonstrate excellence in the classroom and contribute service to their community. Any student with a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.5 who has logged 120 hours of verified service before May 1st of their senior year is eligible to receive this designation on their high school diploma. Volunteer log sheets can be obtained in the counseling office and students can log hours beginning in their freshman year. If you are a senior, please return your completed logs to Jessica before May 1st

JUNIOR INTERVIEWS

COUNSELING CONTACTS
Counselors build rapport with each of their students throughout the school year here at South; they are available for brief or time-sensitive questions during daily drop-in hours and are also available for longer appointments as scheduled.
