Welcome to the online source of information about the CAM programs at South.
Basically, a CAM (Career-Aligned Mastery) program is a way that South students can "major" in a topic of personal interest, develop marketable skills, and get a terrific head start on a career. Students who are on track to earn a CAM (medallion and honor) do not have to complete a "Senior Project," because the CAM satisfies the state-mandated graduation requirement (see below) relating to "Career-Related Learning Standards"... that... and much more!
There are two kinds of information that you need, to understand the CAM option:
- General information that pertains to every CAM -- the famed "CAM Portfolio," with it's well-defined elements, and deadlines -- all spelled out and linked to helpful documents, from the CAM "Home" page (here are the CAM general brochures for 08-09 and 09-10), and
- CAM-specific information -- the teacher, the courses, the activities that are at the heart of each CAM program -- accessible from the graphic below. The CAM-specific pages, ever-evolving, are a quick look at each program, so that students and parents can learn about and compare the programs, in order to assist in the decision-making process at the end of Junior year. Just "spin" the dial below to get the CAM you want to see in the top box, and click the "Go to..." link to go to each CAM's home page.

CAM INFORMATION FROM THE SEHS CURRICULUM GUIDE for 2010-2011:
SEHS Career Related Learning Standards Graduation Requirements
Students must meet Oregon graduation requirements in Career Related Learning Standards (CRLS) by developing an education plan, demonstrating career-related knowledge and skills, and participating in career-related learning experiences demonstrating proficiency as outlined in their education plan. Students meet these requirements through curriculum across all four years of high school in which they explore career and education options, create an Education Plan and Profile, and complete a final project through a community experience.
- 9th grade – Freshman Project – CIS* IDEAS – beginning career exploration; begin ‘My Plan’
- 10th grade – Sophomore Project – CIS* SKILLS - investigation of personal interests and skills; résumé; Sophomore Conference/Interview; PLAN test
- 11th grade – Junior Project – in-depth research for post-high school planning, including education/training, careers, scholarships and financial aid; PSAT test
- 12th grade –Senior Project (Classic); or CAM; or Senior Project (IHS)
+ Individual Junior and Senior Conference/Interview each year with counselors
+ All students attend the South Career Symposium every other year
*The Oregon “Career Information System” (CIS) is the primary resource for students to assess interests and preferences, and to research education, training, career, and scholarship information.
CAREER-ALIGNED MASTERY PROGRAMS OF STUDY — CAM
Career Aligned Mastery (CAM) Programs of Study are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are competent in critical academic areas and career/life knowledge. These skills provide a platform for further schooling, employment, and productive living. Students who successfully complete these programs of study meet state Career Related Learning Standards, which includes the ability to apply and transfer knowledge to new situations, solve problems, communicate, work in teams, and plan for the future. Students in these programs must meet all graduation requirements and participate in a variety of career cluster related activities in and outside of school. A comprehensive portfolio is required. Career aligned programs are offered and organized in the areas listed below.
Arts and Communications – Visual Arts, Journalism, Music Performance and Theater Arts
Business and Management – Marketing, Culinary Arts and Information Technology
Human Resources – Early Childhood Education
CAM teachers and the School-to-Career coordinator work with students to guide them through this personalized learning experience. Many students in CAM Programs use their portfolio as documentation and demonstration of skills and achievements for college admission, scholarships and employment.

P.S. ABOUT THAT GRAPHIC!!
"Spinny" -- as named by it's creator, Jamie Miller (IT CAM 2011), started out as an experiment with JavaScript during ACT (Advanced Computer Topics) class. It was fun to teacher Mary to look over and see Jamie staring at/playing with these bright-colored circles moving this way and that, on the monitor, during class. Only in ACT!! Well, as the need for a CAM website was put into the awareness of Evan Clark (IT CAM 2010), who sits across the way from Jamie -- Evan did was HE does so well, and spotted the possibility: Could "Spinny" be programmed to be used on the CAM website? Evan and Jamie worked together on this possibility for awhile, before Mary even knew about it. She was thrilled! Mary went and worked out the words and colors to be used on the site, and Jamie programmed it all in, and helped her get it to work on this page. It's such a great story of collaboration... no one but Jamie could have programmed it, no one but Evan could have seen that possibility, and no one but Mary could have had such a blast with it!
